|Discourse on a Hill
“The country needs you,” the guest implored, short of breath following his lengthy climb. “An entity such as yourself should have no problem bridging the gap between our two parties. Please, accept my offer.” “I am not the man for whom you search.” “Why so humble? We both know how perfect you’d be for the job. You’d never break a sweat.” The man on the hill shrugged his shoulders. “I admit we once thought you weren’t very special, but a lot of us are changing our minds. Fifty thousand constituents wait at the base of this very hill.” “Why didn’t they climb up to meet me?” “Because they didn’t want to dirty their shoes or rip their eveningwear.” “Oh.” “But we did confer before I made the climb. And they are unanimous in their resolve to get you into Office.” “I care not for the pleasures of-” “They’re even willing to elect you retroactively. They can’t go back into the past, but they assume you can. They are right about that, aren’t they?” “I exist beyond notions of time.” “Excellent! Just imagine how history will collapse in on itself to accommodate your entry into politics. But here’s the most beautiful... more...

|THE UNIVERSALITY OF MAUREEN
Water gushes down from the showerhead onto me and my troubles are washed away. They of course accumulate again, as does the dirt during the working day. But a good shower – nothing beats it – not a good hard hot shower. Who can go without it and say that they’ve truly lived? The only problem is something curious happens every time I have one. I get under the showerhead on a workday morning at 6.45, and lo and behold, after spending a mere 5 minutes there I come out to find that it is already 7.40. more...

|MAP OF AMERICA
I’d always loved maps. In fact the walls of my office at home were covered with them. Almost every part of the globe was represented there with some areas even being duplicated as I acquired an occasional historical map. Behind this apparent obsession there was however a practical use. And this was to track the progress in the promotion of a C.D that my band had recorded. Since its release I’d been sending copies of the product far and wide in an effort to gain exposure for us. With thoughts of world domination aside, the primary reason for the maps remained geographical. Since I was a child, this view of the world from above had always fascinated me. It felt as though I were truly suspended aloft and able to swoop down and visit any place that caught my eye. Immediately above my desk was a large map of North America. The nature of my endeavours in this office meant that much of the time was spent in search of inspiration. When the inexact science of promotion is further hindered by having no budget, the amount of time required to target a successful hit rises dramatically. ... more...

In the cigarette smoke there were pictures. And as the smoke rose and dissipated, so the pictures faded and were gone. At the window a view of the old gate in the field unused. Beyond the gate the fields rolled on forever. These were the meadows for the pathways of the travelers or perhaps they were pathways for the meadows themselves untraveled. In the shadows of the sun lay memories. As within the pictures of the smoke or in the vision of an eye still closed, they wandered. Were the memories real with myself the shadows image. Or were the pictures, the viewer and the space between them, all but nothing. I knew there was purpose in my presence here and understood its gravity. Yet how to perform this role or roles and for whom. What wisdom required that my thoughts alone should ponder such meanings. And why was I so haunted with memories yet without recollection. This house immortal, having no soul to shed, had itself fathered no dreams. To arrive, if one had ever left, was to dream and to fill the space of the void before and after. A place of one but... more...

|Legends of the Blacksword
For nearly three millennia the fae High Kings ruled from the Shadowless City of Atlan and during that time there were only three ever to wear the Crown—Telamures Ys, Raachu Horeb, and Ghendil Tiamat. The fall of the greatest in power and tyrannical infamy of these Mighty ones, Tiamat, is a legend told more often than the tales of his rule which lasted longer than any before. Betrayed by his chief adviser who was also a human Archmage, Ghendil was cast down, lost to the world perhaps forever. His family and vassals were immediately winnowed by his rivals, who coveted the Crown of Atlan. Those that survived those dark days went into hiding or left the Atlantis altogether to gather their strength for a reckoning… Ghenma Tiamat, was raised in secret in the manse of his mother’s chief guard, Sulima Lulinwe. Sulima is a peerless champion of the last faerie war and head of a disbanded order called the Dragon’s Handmaidens, so Ghenma is schooled in all that she knows to teach–even the secret techniques of her order. Destined to regain his birthright and restore the realm to its former glory known in the days of Horeb Ra, he must... more...

Phoenix Rebirth, another technology brought to you by the Microsoft Union of companies, and by the technology of the fiftieth century. It costs a whopping, 50,000,000,000 Dollars for a single tube. He placed his hand deep into the front of his pants. Damn, they’re quick! He let his hand rest there, fingers intermingled within the bristly forest of thickened, coarse hairs. He waited. Soon he would begin to feel them moving about, sliding along those same hairs. Slowly the hustle and bustle of tiny feet begin their foraging and searching for food, company, intimacy, and whatever the critters crave. Suddenly the hand lurches out of ambush. The forefinger and thumb enclose upon the body of the wriggling thing. It begins to slide away, but the man is quick to tighten his grasp. Just in time he applies a vise grip on its leg. He pulls and the critter begins to spiral along the hair. It desperately grasps to the hair with its other four limbs. The critter does a loop-de-loop as it continues along the path of the hair. Suddenly the critter pops out into the light. The man studies it. It is some kind of insect he thinks. A little bit bigger than the last one. He puts it into a jar with the others. The insect peers at him through the jar. It’s five legs are gyrating in anger.... more...

Introduction This story is fiction, and like most good fiction there have to be some facts distributed throughout the tale or it just doesn’t cut it. A tale of fantasy doesn’t need facts but fiction does. So to give you something to hang on to throughout the story I’ll start with these three absolute facts. They are: ONE – Late in the 1990s scientists confirmed that the Universal expansion was accelerating. This discovery was in direct opposition to previous beliefs, that the Universes rate of expansion was slowing. TWO – As of the date of this writing, a uniform explanation as to the nature or origin of energy, has not yet been established. THREE – There is on record at the United States Copyright Office in Washington, D.C., a publication entitled – “A Theoretical Speculation of Energy Creation and Workings of the Universe” Now before I get to the prelude I’d like to quote a prominent physicist born on April 23, 1858 in Kiel, Germany. He died on October 4, 1947.Here’s what he said: “A new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die .... more...
